Favela (which is a Brazilian-Portuguese word for "slum) is the name given to the very poor areas of Rio.


    The favelas are neighbourhoods with poorly-made homes that have usually been built by the people living in them. 


   Although they 're racially-mixed , the majority were created when black slaves were given their freedom in 1888, but had no jobs or homes to go to.
  
     It's impossible to drive a car into most favelas because the streets are very narrow. 


   In these alleys , crime rates are very high because of the gang culture that exists there.
